Girard School District’s Elk Valley Elementary School was closed Monday following a fire Sunday night.
District administrators met Monday to assess the damage and determine when the school would reopen.
The fire began began at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday and was caused by heating lamps used to hatch baby chicks for a science experiment in a first-grade classroom, district officials said.
The fire was contained to the classroom, but smoke filled the building.
The school was closed while the damage was assessed.
