Alachua County schools closed Tuesday, Wednesday
All schools in Alachua County, including the University of Florida and Santa Fe College, will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, as Tropical Storm Idalia inches its way toward Florida’s Gulf Coast.
The storm is expected to make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane by late Tuesday evening with winds up to 115 mph by the time it hits somewhere near Cedar Key.
Alachua County school district officials held an emergency meeting Monday and felt the storm warranted closing schools for two days, as locations may be used as shelters. The district also announced its scheduled rezoning community input meetings for Tuesday and Thursday would be canceled, as will the regularly scheduled school board meeting.
The University of Florida will close at noon Tuesday and remain closed on Wednesday. All academic and student-related activities, including online classes and exams, also have been canceled
